Compiled by Allan Urbanic

Since the last installment of this bibliographic series two important events have occurred in Pushkin studies. The first was the publication of Lauren Leighton’s excellent update of Pushkin scholarship in English marking the bicentennial of the poet’s birth. The second was the bicentennial itself. Each, in its own way, made the task of this compilation a bit more difficult.

Leighton’s compilation is an ambitious attempt to bring up to date the record of Pushkin studies published in the English language and is a far more Herculean task than what has been attempted here. Covering decades of publications, it truly stands as a monument of Pushkin bibliography. While there will be overlap between Leighton’s effort and this current work, each heads in different directions. Leighton covers a considerable span of time while limiting entries to those in English. This bibliography ventures into the realm of non-English scholarship, though only back in time to its more recent predecessor published in Pushkin Review a few years ago. The compiler hopes that this effort will prove useful to pushkinisty of both present and future.

The bicentennial significantly increased the number of Pushkin-related publications, both translations and critical works, that would normally appear in a span of several years. It would be wrongly boastful to claim that the current compilation comprehensively covers Western Pushkin scholarship of this period. No doubt there are nooks and crannies of academic publishing that have been overlooked. One of the French Symbolist poets once said that a poem is never finished, it is only abandoned. I feel that I too, in order to meet publishing deadlines, must abandon my bibliographic efforts at this time, but with the hope that later installments will correct the omissions of this one.

A few details of methodology need to be mentioned. The entries below appear without altering the author’s transliteration scheme. Those works published originally in Russian were transliterated by the compiler using the Library of Congress transliteration scheme without diacritics. Translations, monographic studies and dissertations were verified only bibliographically. Articles, except those marked with an *, were verified in hand. Only works published outside of the boundaries of the Former Soviet Union were considered for inclusion. One will notice a number of works listed that were published in the Far East, thus seemingly contradicting the traditional term West in the title of this ongoing work. For the sake of inclusiveness, I hope the reader will overlook this small inconsistency.
